The Camp America Application Process Explained - The Summer Camp Rookie Ep. 5

What is a special needs camp, and do you need experience to work at one? In this episode of The Summer Camp Rookie, Taylor shares her experience working at a Camp America special needs camp, the training and support she received, and why it became one of the most rewarding experiences of her life.

What Is a Special Needs Camp?

Special needs camps are summer camps designed to support children and adults living with physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities. While the campers may have additional support needs, the goal is the same as any other summer camp: creating a fun, safe, and memorable experience where campers can make friends, try new activities, and build confidence.

In this episode of The Summer Camp Rookie, Taylor shares her experience working at a special needs camp through Camp America and explains why it completely changed her perspective on camp, work, and her future career.

What Is It Like Working at a Special Needs Camp?

Many people assume they need previous experience supporting people with disabilities before applying to a special needs camp. In reality, that's not always the case.

Taylor had no direct special needs experience before arriving at camp. What she did have was an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a desire to make a difference. Through extensive staff training, support from experienced returners, and guidance from camp professionals, she quickly gained the skills and confidence needed for the role.

Do You Need Experience to Work at a Special Needs Camp?

Not necessarily.

While some applicants may already have experience in care, education, support work, healthcare, or related fields, many camps are looking for compassionate, enthusiastic people who are willing to learn. Comprehensive training is provided before campers arrive, covering areas such as personal care, communication, meal support, accessibility, and camper wellbeing.

Many participants discover that the qualities camps value most are patience, empathy, adaptability, and a positive attitude.

How Are Special Needs Camps Different?

The biggest difference is that campers may require additional support throughout the day. However, the overall camp experience often looks very similar to traditional summer camps.

Campers still take part in activities, social events, outdoor adventures, waterfront activities, performances, games, and camp traditions. The focus remains on helping campers have fun, build confidence, and create lasting memories.

Some special needs camps also welcome adults as well as children, creating opportunities to support people across different age groups and life stages.

What Training Do Special Needs Camp Staff Receive?

Special needs camps often provide additional training before the summer begins. Depending on the camp, this may include:

  • Personal care training
  • Manual handling techniques
  • Communication support
  • Accessibility awareness
  • Meal support and dietary requirements
  • Camper wellbeing and safeguarding
  • Activity adaptation and inclusion

Many participants say this training leaves them feeling supported and prepared, even if they arrive with no prior experience.

Why Do People Love Working at Special Needs Camps?

For many staff, the relationships they build with campers are what make the experience so meaningful.

Participants often describe the role as challenging, rewarding, eye-opening, and incredibly fulfilling. Many leave camp with greater confidence, stronger communication skills, and a deeper understanding of inclusion and accessibility.

Can Working at Camp Influence Your Career?

Absolutely.

Taylor explains how her experience at camp inspired her to move into disability support work after returning home. The skills she developed while supporting campers helped shape her future career and opened doors she hadn't previously considered.

For many participants, camp becomes more than just a summer abroad. It provides practical experience, personal growth, and valuable skills that can influence future careers in education, healthcare, social care, psychology, youth work, and beyond.
